Jordan on Wednesday said enhancing water and energy security is fundamental for achieving sustainable development as the water-poor country imports majority of its energy needs.
Jordan's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati said at the opening of the Water and Energy Conference that Jordan ranks as one of the world's water-poorest countries, while the country imports 88 percent of its energy demand.
The water sector consumes some 14 percent of Jordan's total energy, she noted, underlining the necessity to institutionalize the water-food-energy nexus. Therefore, joint teams, including stakeholders from the energy and water sectors, were formed to ensure the reduction of energy costs, improve the efficiency of the water sector and maintain the stability of the power grid, she added.
Reviewing key national projects to enhance water-food-energy sectors, Zawati highlighted efforts towards increasing the contribution of renewable energy in the electricity era from 2021's 21 percent to 31 percent by 2030.
The two-day conference will discuss the latest technologies and previous studies in the fields of water and energy, as well as include dialogue sessions addressing ways to bridge the gap between the water and energy sectors.
