Israeli researchers develop new tech to produce green hydrogen from renewable energy

Release Date:2024-01-16 13:04:01     Source:Xinhua

Israeli researchers developed a new technology for producing eco-friendly green hydrogen, the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) said in a statement on Sunday.

In this novel method, described in the scientific journal Nature Materials, green hydrogen is generated at a high rate through two-stage electrolysis of a sodium bromine solution in water.

The Technion noted that the new technology may help accelerate the use of green hydrogen as a clean and sustainable substitute for polluting mineral fuel.

In the new process, hydrogen and oxygen are created simultaneously in two separate cells through electrolysis, involving water decomposition into oxygen and hydrogen.

To produce green hydrogen on an industrial scale through electrolysis, expensive membrane, and sealing components are typically required to buffer between a half-cell where hydrogen is produced at the cathode, and the other half where oxygen is produced at the anode.

The new method includes two separate cells, eliminating the need for these components, reducing costs, and optimizing the production of clean hydrogen.

Meanwhile, in the new technology, a liquid electrolyte of sodium bromine in water replaces the solid electrode, overcoming operational challenges and capacity limitations.
