French company to start gas extraction in Myanmar off-shore area

France's TOTAL company will start extraction of natural gas later this month in the Gulf of Mottama, offshore of Myanmar, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Sunday.

The gas extraction will be conducted at offshore Yadana gas field in blocks M5 and M6 in the Andaman Sea, Ayeyawaddy regional Minister of Electricity, Energy, Industry and Transport U Win Htay was quoted as saying.

The M5 field is expected to yield 780 million cubic-feet of natural gas per day.

Myanmar's key natural gas fields include Yadana, Shwe, Zawhtika and Yedagun.

Natural gas represents a major export item of Myanmar. According to statistics, Myanmar earned about 1.64 billion U.S. dollars from natural gas export in the first seven months of the current fiscal year 2017-2018, up 20 million U.S. dollars compared to the same period in the last fiscal year.
