Lancang-Mekong Energy Access Capacity Building Programme kicked off on October 22, 2019

Lancang-Mekong Energy Access Capacity Building Programme (hereinafter refer to as the programme) kicked off on October 22, 2019 in Chengdu.

With the theme “Promoting Energy Access by Smart Microgrid and Clean Cooking”, 35 leaders of competent energy authorities as well as experts and scholars from countries within Lancang-Mekong region attend the programme to contribute insights and suggestions for energy access within the region. During the 4-day activity, participants will conduct in-depth discussion on the status quo and the problems of energy access within Lancang-Mekong region from the perspectives of smart microgrid and clean cooking, fully share the achievements and experience of China on solving energy access problems such as bringing electricity to regions without access to electricity, actively explore the roadmaps and demonstration project for realizing universal energy access within the region. After the programme, participants will visit the exhibition hall of Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute under Tsinghua University to gain further understanding of China's technical strength in clean energy production and consumption, deep integration of energy and information, large-scale energy storage and hydrogen energy utilization.

Currently, countries within Lancang-Mekong river are facing challenges in achieving Sustainable Development Goal on Energy (SDG7). As of the end of 2017, there were still 32 million population without access to electricity and 101 million people had not achieved clean cooking in Lancang-Mekong region. The energy access problems outstand especially for Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. At the same time, the Lancang-Mekong region is endowed with rich clean energy resources. Through scientific planning and effective utilization of clean energy resources, increasing the development of renewable energy and distributed energy is an effective way to accelerate the realization of SDG7 for countries within Lancang-Mekong region.

China has reached universal electricity access in 2015 and has accumulated rich experience and technical strength in solving electricity accessibility problems as well as in renewable energy development, which can provide highly operable reference for Lancang-Mekong countries. The Lancang-Mekong Energy Access Capacity Building Programme is to cultivate professional and technical officials in energy access in Lancang-Mekong region through in-depth sharing of China's policies, technologies and business cases in relevant fields, so as to provide lasting assistance for regional sustainable development and realize leap-forward development of regional energy and economy. This activity is the first implementation of the programme. As the first attempt of the programme, the activity has gained strong support from international organizations and energy departments such as ASEAN Center for Energy, Mekong River Commission, Ministry of Mines and Energy of Cambodia, Ministry of Energy and Mines of Lao PRC, Ministry of Electricity and Energy of Myanmar, Ministry of Energy of Thailand, Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam.

Under the guidance and great support of National Energy Administration and Lancang-Mekong Cooperation China Secretariat. The programme was held by China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute and has received strong support from Sichuan Provincial Energy Administration, POWERCHINA Chengdu Engineering Corporation Limited, Zonergy Company Limited, China Southern Power Co.,Ltd, State Grid Corporation of China, LONGi Green Energy Technology Co.,Ltd, Rural Energy and Environment Agency, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
