China Power International Development, known as China Power, and a core subsidiary of China's energy giant State Power Investment Corp, is stepping up efforts on hydrogen applications.

One of its most recent moves to tap the clean energy potential was the kickoff of construction work at the Zhongguancun Yanqing Park Hydrogen Refueling Station Phase II Project, a hydrogen refueling station in Yanqing district, Beijing, as part of the supporting system for the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The station will adopt the advanced technology of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) pure water electrolysis for hydrogen production, and will build the first set of megawatt-level water electrolysis for hydrogen production device in China, with plans to equip production devices for high-quality hydrogen and 70 Mpa hydrogenation units.

It will build a hydrogen-testing laboratory and a research and development platform for green power-based water electrolysis and hydrogen formation, to form a smart network for the entire supply chain of hydrogen production, storage, transportation and hydrogenation.

It will also work with related universities and companies to work on key bottleneck issues in hydrogen technologies through a combination of applications and academic research, contributing to hydrogen-related technology innovations in Beijing and the parent company.

Once the second phase of the project finishes, the maximum daily hydrogen production capacity of the station will be 500 kilograms, and the maximum hydrogenation capacity of the station can reach 2 metric tons, making it one of the key pieces of hydrogen infrastructure in Yanqing district while ensuring the demand for the 2022 Winter Games.

Fu Jinsong, member of the Party Committee and vice-president of the company, said China Power will actively promote the development of the green hydrogen energy industry, while continuing to explore the application of green and zero-carbon hydrogen energy technology.

Through such moves, the company hopes to help Yanqing district to build a beautiful city for the Winter Games, while contributing to Beijing's endeavors in environmental protection, as well as China's efforts to achieve the carbon peak and neutrality timeline goals.
