Government officials, energy experts and business leaders from around the world are in Suzhou for the annual International Forum on Energy Transition. Yu Li has the story.

This is the 10th anniversary of the International Forum on Energy Transition, seen as a high-level platform for international dialogue on a clean energy future. The world has seen progress in renewable energy development. Last year, renewable power capacity increased by 585 GigaWatts, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. More than 90 per cent of new power capacity came from renewable sources.

FRANCESCO LA CAMERA, Director-General, International Renewable Energy Agency "More than 90% of new power capacity was renewables. China has the 40% of it."

China continues to develop clean energy sources. The country's installed renewable energy capacity has surged from 28 per cent to about 60 per cent since 2012, establishing the world's largest renewable energy infrastructure.

FRANCESCO LA CAMERA, Director-General, International Renewable Energy Agency "It's easy to say that China plays a leading role in energy transition. We cannot do this without China."

YU LI, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province "These models show China's major infrastructure projects and facilities that generate renewable energy from different sources: the sun, wind, hydrogen from mountain peaks, the ocean, and even nuclear power. They also feature advanced grids that transfer clean energy efficiently and cheaply. And there, the focus on consumption highlights innovations that convert waste into useful products. A jacket is made from captured carbon dioxide, a bag is crafted entirely from recycled plastic bottles, and a packet/box of carbon-neutral black tea has its entire carbon footprint meticulously recorded from production to packaging."

After examining the renewable energy cycle, from production to consumption and recycling, delegates at this year's forum in Suzhou are expected to deliver a joint Vision on the global energy transition. The goal is to achieve tangible outcomes: less pollution and a more hospitable climate for all.
