China Southern Power Grid (CSG) successfully hosted the first “Lancang-Mekong Week” from March 21st to 23rd, 2018. The event, held in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, included the following activities:

·      The 5th Power Utility Summit;

·      The “Exhibition of Power Cooperation Achievements Among Lancang-Mekong Countries”;

·      Culture Night;

·      Networking activities for 39 CSG-sponsored international students from Greater Mekong Sub Region (GMS) countries.

In 2014, CSG proposed the Power Utility Summit and received positive feedback from other GMS power utility organizations. The first summit, hosted by CSG, was held in Guangzhou in March 2014 and since then, three summits were held concurrently in Luang Prabang, Laos; Bangkok, Thailand and Da Nang, Vietnam. The theme of this fifth summit was "Interconnection and Win-Win Cooperation" with a total of 37 delegates, representing:

·      China Southern Power Grid (CSG)

·      électricité du Cambodia (EDC)

·      électricité du Laos (EDL)

·      Ministry of Electricity and Energy of Myanmar (MOEE)

·      Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and

·      Electricity of Vietnam (EVN)

Delegates introduced the development status and planning of the power industry within their own countries while experts from CSG briefed the attendees on UHVDC power transmission technology. Delegates unanimously affirmed that the summit has become an important platform for technical exchanges and cooperation among power utility organizations within the sub-region, the promotion of regional grid interconnection and the sharing of information and experience. Based on full exchanges and discussions, all parties reached consensus that regional grid interconnection serves common interests.

During the summit, delegates visited the “Exhibition of Power Cooperation Achievements Among Lancang-Mekong Countries”, which reviewed the previous four summits and showcased the achievements in power cooperation between CSG and the other five countries. Through the exhibition, delegates deepened their understanding and recognition of "Interconnection and Win-Win Cooperation" advocated by CSG and expressed their appreciation to CSG for its significant organizational efforts to make the summit successful.

To deepen exchanges, cooperation and friendship with all parties involved, CSG hosted the Culture Night on March 22nd. A total of 16 programs were presented, including songs and dances embodying the culture of CSG and Chinese ethnic minorities as well as special programs presented by delegates from Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. As an important supporting event during the summit, the Culture Night promoted mutual trust and friendship of all participants.

On March 23rd, delegates also visited the Guangxi Electric Power Dispatching and Control Center and the Monitoring and Early Warning Platform of Electrical Equipment of Guangxi Power Grid to obtain a greater understanding of the grid structure and operating features, west-to-east power transmission and reliable power supply, on-line equipment monitoring and early-warning platform operations of CSG and Guangxi Power Grid Corporation. Based on situations within their own countries, delegates conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions with CSG experts on specific issues such as grid interconnection and new energy development and utilization.

Also on March 23rd, CSG hosted networking activities for international students from other GMS countries in Nanning. International students who attended the activities included 10 Cambodian postgraduates from Guangxi University and 29 undergraduates from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam from Kunming University of Science and Technology. The students expressed their gratitude to CSG for providing them with the opportunity to study in China and shared their determination to be diligent in their studies and prepare for future exchanges and cooperation with China. The students sang and danced in their own traditional costumes and presented the culture and customs of their home countries.
