China's tropical island province Hainan has activated new submarine cables to increase the stability of the island's power grid.
The four 500-kv ultra-high voltage cables across the Qiongzhou Strait are 32-km-long each and have no in-between joint, according to the China Southern Power Grid Co. Ltd. (CSG).
They have added to the three cables that had linked Hainan and the mainland province of Guangdong since 2009, and will increase power supply to Hainan by 600,000 kilowatts, the CSG said.
"Its operation can alleviate the island's strained power supply amid the recent intense heat, increase the grid's stability, and improve the island's business environment," said Cheng Qiyun, deputy general manager of the Hainan branch of CSG.
