Lebanon and Jordan signed on Wednesday a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the energy sector, the National News Agency reported.

"We are seeking to cooperate with Jordan in exchange of expertise in the field of energy while getting support in building our capacities in this field," Lebanon's Water and Energy Minister Nada Boustani said during the tenth International Beirut Energy Forum held in Beirut.

Boustani said that this agreement would constitute the beginning of cooperation with other Arab and foreign countries to draw a roadmap for successful models in the energy sector.

Lebanon is committed to getting 12 percent of its energy from renewable sources in 2020, she said.

The minister added that her ministry signed three contracts to buy energy from wind farms in Akkar.

Lebanon has been suffering for years from lack of electricity as the government is incapable of generating the needed amount of power.

Successive governments failed over the years to build power stations to solve the electricity problem in the country.

Lebanon has lately adopted a new plan to fix Lebanon's electricity sector by building six brand new power plants over the next six years.
