A large gas field was discovered in the south of Iran, a deputy head of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency on Sunday.
Reza Dehqan said the huge gas field named "Eram" was discovered in the southern province of Fars.
The field has a reserve capacity of 19 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in place, said Dehqan.
More information about the discovery will be announced later, he added.
Iran shares huge gas reserves with Qatar. The gas reserves of the 9,700-square-km field amount to about eight percent of the world's total, with 3,700 square km on the Iranian side.
