Namibia will make local production account for 60 percent of its power supply thanks to a raft of measures to improve power generation, a senior government official said Monday.

Namibian Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo said the country had liberalized the power sector to allow independent power producers and renewable energy companies to enter the energy market.

Currently, Namibia relies on power imports from Zimbabwe and South Africa, which Alweendo said had delayed its industrialization.

"We have put in place different measures as well as identified priority projects to make sure we are power sustaining by 2021. We have moved away from the monopoly where state owned Nampower was the only buyer of power, and allow other consumers to buy power directly from producers," he said.

Alweendo said Namibia is looking at biomass energy, renewable energy and conventional energy to sustain its power supply.
