The expansion of photovoltaic and storage technology in Germany could create around 50,000 new jobs by 2040, according to a study published by the German Solar Association (BSW-Solar) on Thursday.
The study conducted by EuPD Research found that the number of jobs in the German photovoltaic and storage technology could fast triple to a total of 78,000, from 26,400 in 2018. Most new jobs would be created in planning and installing as well as operating and maintaining photovoltaic systems.
The annual turnover of the German photovoltaic and storage industry was set to grow from currently 5 billion to 12.5 billion euros (13.9 billion U.S. dollars) over the next twenty years, according to the study.
To avoid a power generation failure due to the closing of conventional power plants and rising electricity consumption, photovoltaic systems in Germany would require to grow at a rate of 10 gigawatts per year, said the report.
The German government agreed in its climate package to increase the share of green electricity from renewable energy sources to 65 percent by 2030.
According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), gross electricity generation through renewable energy sources in Germany already went up from 33.1 percent in 2017 to 35 percent in 2018. In the second quarter 2019, the share of renewables in Germany hit nearly 46 percent.
