German energy industry reports more turnover in 2018

Total turnover of German energy companies rose 12.9 percent year on year to reach 488.1 billion euros (542.5 billion U.S. dollars) in 2018, according to figures released on Thursday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Since 2010, electricity prices for consumers in Germany have gone up by 28 percent and exceeded an average of 30 euro cents per kWh for the first time in 2019, according to the German grid agency (Bundesnetzagentur).

Electricity prices for commercial and industrial customers also increased in 2019, the Bundesnetzagentur noted. In Germany, industrial customers were only paying around half as much for electricity as private consumers.

Including the water and waste management industry in Germany, turnover in 2018 went up by 13.2 percent in comparison to the previous year and reached 615.3 billion euros, according to Destatis.

At the same time, investments in tangible fixed assets by the German energy, water and waste management industry also went up by 17.5 percent to 18.4 billion euros.

More than half of the total investments, or 10.7 billion euros, were made in electricity supply, according to Destatis.

The number of employees in the German energy, water and waste management sectors also rose by 3.8 percent to a total of around 469,000 people.
