Total, an energy giant, announced Tuesday that the Tungsten Explorer drilling vessel has reached the exclusive economic zone in Lebanon to drill a well in Block 4 in the first oil and gas exploration activity in Lebanon's territorial waters, the National News Agency reported.
Total said that Block 4 is located off the Lebanese coast, about 30 km away from Beirut and the exploration takes place at a depth of 1,500 meters from the surface of the sea.
"Drilling the well aims at exploring reservoirs located at a depth exceeding 2,500 meters below the seafloor. It is estimated that the drilling will continue for two months, after which the ship will leave Lebanon," it added.
In February 2018, Lebanon signed its first offshore oil and gas exploration and production contracts for Blocks 4 and 9 with a consortium of France's Total, Italy's Eni and Russia's Novatek.
Lebanon hopes to boost its economy through offshore energy discovery.
