Bangladesh has decide to hike electricity prices by 5.3 percent at retail and 8.4 percent at wholesale levels from next month.
The increases were approved by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission and the decision was announced here by its chairman Monowar Islam on Thursday.
Islam while announcing the decision at a press conference said the new tariffs will come into effect on March 1.
According to the announcement, the retail power tariff has been increased from 6.77 taka to 7.13 taka per kilowatt-hour unit and 4.77 taka to 5.17 taka at wholesale level.
Experts said the markup in the main power prices would push up the nation's inflation rate again to a some extent.
Bangladesh's non-food inflation rose to 6.30 percent in January from 5.55 percent in last December, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). (1 U.S. dollar equals about 86 taka)
