A total of 6.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas were extracted in Germany in 2019, a decline by 3.8 percent compared to the previous year, the German federal association for natural gas, oil and geoenergy (BVEG) announced on Monday.
At the same time, the amount of extracted crude oil in Germany decreased to almost 2 million tons, according to the BVEG.
In total, the German natural gas and crude oil industry achieved a turnover of 1.8 billion euros (2 billion U.S. dollars) in 2019.
The federal association of the energy and water industries (BDEW) announced last week that natural gas consumption in Germany in 2019 had increased by 3.3 percent to 982 billion kilowatt hours.
"Natural gas and crude oil will remain relevant in the future, but as producers in particular we must demonstrate the determination to shape our future," said BVEG managing director Ludwig Moehring.
"Thanks to production close to consumption," natural gas and crude oil from Germany had a more "favorable" CO2 balance than imported gas or oil, and also contributed to Germany's supply security and domestic value creation, stressed Moehring.
