Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said on Friday that his country started to import oil from the United States.
The minister confirmed the start of U.S. oil supplies to Belarus.
The deal became possible as a result of the agreements reached during the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Belarus and his meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
Delivery of American oil is part of the state strategy to diversify sources and secure steady functioning of the oil processing complex of Belarus in 2020 and subsequent years, the official said.
Belarus sees cooperation with the United States in oil sector as an essential element of the country's energy security, Makei said.
The Belarusian side expects the first tanker with American oil for Belarus will arrive at the port of Lithuanian Klaipeda in early June.
