Kuwait plans to stop employing foreign workers in the oil sector for the year 2020-2021, Khaled Al-Fadhel, the Kuwaiti Minister of Oil, Acting Minister of Electricity and Water said Wednesday.

During a parliamentary committee session, the minister affirmed that the oil sector must start recruiting Kuwaiti nationals only and reduce the number of expatriates contracts.

He stressed that the price of oil per barrel decreased during the coronavirus crisis as a result of the lack of demand, but the oil market is now recovering as prices have returned to rise.

"I believed that the oil sector should not be the only source of income," he said, stressing the need for the private sector to participate in strengthening the national economy and developing legislation and laws to protect this sector.
