Israel will cut its coal use for electricity generation by 17 percent by the end of this year, according to a statement released by the state's Ministry of Energy on Wednesday.
Thus, Israeli energy minister Yuval Steinitz decided that the rate of coal use at the power plants operated by the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) would not exceed 24.9 percent by the end of 2020, compared with 30 percent in 2019.
The ministry said, "this decision will save dozens of early death cases caused by air pollution."
This decision is part of the minister's policy to wean Israel off using coal by 2025, while reducing air pollution.
