Israel will conduct a drill to prepare for potential spill from the largest gas rig in Israeli waters, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said Wednesday.
According to a ministry statement, the exercise will take place in September on northern Israeli shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
The objective is to get ready for any malfunctions that may occur with the Leviathan natural gas platform located about 120 km west of the coastal city of Haifa, which could result in an oil spill in the sea or on Israeli beaches.
One of the goals is improving the response skills and time to such an incident by the rig's U.S. owner Noble Energy company, the regional council, local authorities, and those who treat and clean up oil spills.
