A senior Zambian government official said on Tuesday that the country's current electricity shortages were expected to be addressed by March next year.

Minister of Energy Matthew Nkhuwa said the construction of a 750 megawatts power plant, the Kafue Gorge Lower, will help cushion the power deficit which currently stands at 810 megawatts.

According to him, 150 megawatts will be commissioned by the end of October 2020 while another 150 megawatts will be on board by December 2020.

Speaking at a press briefing, he noted that the remaining 450 megawatts will be added to the national grid by March next year.

He further said that in order to mitigate the power deficit, the power utility has partnered with POWERCHINA for the development of 600 megawatts of renewable energy plants in various parts of the country.
