The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company has hiked power tariffs with effect from Monday by another 50 percent for the third time in six weeks.
"The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company has adjusted the electricity tariffs by 50 percent. This is in accordance with the tariff award of October 2, 2019, which approved implementation of monthly tariff indexation formula for charges above 10 percent," the power utility said Sunday.
Domestic consumers on prepaid meters will now pay 1.67 Zimbabwe dollars (ZWL) per kWh for the first 50 kWh, going up to 3.65 ZWL per kWh for the next 150 kWh and then 9.92 ZWL per kWh for the next 100kWh.
Anything beyond 300 kWh will be charged a tariff of 15.57 per kWh.
The first 50 percent power tariff increase was effected on Sept. 23, followed by another one two weeks later, and then the latest one which kicks in Monday.
The power utility has over the years been lobbying for higher tariffs arguing that its charges were sub-economic.
