The construction of a new thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts has started in the central Sirdaria region, the Uzbek Energy Ministry said Wednesday.
The construction was started by a Chinese general contractor -- China Gezhouba Group Corporation -- which will complete the power plant in Boyovut district on a turnkey basis, it said.
Japanese consortium Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems will supply two combined gas-turbines, which are expected to generate up to 10 billion kWh of electricity per year.
Earlier this year, the Uzbek Energy Ministry signed an electricity purchase agreement with Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power for a period of 25 years worth 1.2 billion U.S. dollars as part of the construction of a thermal power plant in the Syrdaria region.
