State-run Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) on Tuesday signed power purchase agreements with six small-scale independent power producers that will add 19.16 megawatts into the national grid.
Costa Rubagumya, TANESCO's strategic planning senior manager, said the six independent power producers have been given a grace period of 18 months to start production of electricity.
"The signing of the power purchase agreements is part of TANESCO's efforts to improve the supply of electricity in the country," Rubagumya told a news conference in the capital Dodoma shortly after the signing of the deals.
He said TANESCO was working under the guidance of the Energy and Water Regulatory Authority (EWURA), adding that TANESCO was currently screening other investors who planned to supply electricity to the company.
He said EWURA's guidelines allow small-scale independent power producers to invest in the production of renewable energy which includes hydro, solar, wind or biomass for specific areas.
Rubagumya said the six small-scale independent power producers have met conditions set by EWURA that allow them to generate and sell power specifically on projects that seek to increase power voltage.
