The U.S. Senate on Thursday confirmed former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm as the country's energy secretary.
Granholm was confirmed by the upper chamber in a 64-35 vote, with 14 Republican senators joining all 50 Democrats in voting in favor of the 62-year-old Canadian-American, who, before serving as Michigan's governor between 2003 and 2011, was the state's attorney general.
"I'm obsessed with creating good-paying clean energy jobs in all corners of America in service of addressing our climate crisis. I'm impatient for results. Now let's get to work!" Granholm tweeted after her confirmation.
In her new capacity, Granholm will lead an agency to help President Joe Biden achieve the goal of making the United States carbon neutral by 2050.
Republicans who doubted Granholm's nomination were concerned about the impact of the Biden administration's environmental policy agenda on the viability of the country's fossil fuel industry.
