Kuwait will implement a project to produce biofuel from plastic waste, the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) said on Tuesday.

The KFAS signed a tripartite agreement with the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) and Q8 Research & Technology Centre on Tuesday to launch the biofuel project, Khawla Al-Shayji, deputy director-general for strategic programs at the KFAS, said in a press statement.

The project is one of the most important national projects of Kuwait in the field of environmental preservation and the promotion of renewable energy sources, Al-Shayji said, adding that it will provide technical solutions in managing plastic waste and producing renewable biofuel in the country.

Manea Al-Sedrawi, acting director-general of the KISR, said that the project will standardize practices in the field of waste management and drive the productive sectors toward a circular economy.

Sultan Al-Salem, the project director, said that the project, in the first phase, aims to study the production of fuel from solid materials and waste in line with Kuwait's Vision 2035, a national development plan.
