Poland's President Andrzej Duda has signed a bill to help households buy coal for heating in winter amid rising energy prices in Europe, the presidential office said on Thursday night.
The Polish government last month proposed a one-off allowance of 3,000 zloty (640 U.S. dollars) for all families that use coal to heat their homes. The law was approved by Poland's parliament earlier in the month.
The new allowance will replace an earlier measure that set a guaranteed price of 996.6 zloty per tonne of coal purchased by households, according to Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa.
The government has earmarked some 11.5 billion zloty for the initiative, according to government officials. (1 zloty = 0.213 U.S. dollars)
