Denmark sees sharp drop in natural gas consumption in H1

Natural gas consumption in Denmark fell by nearly 29.3 percent in the first half of 2022 (H1) compared to the same period last year, according to quarterly statistics issued by the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) on Monday.

By contrast, consumption of oil and coal increased by 19.4 percent and 1.1 percent respectively, said the DEA.

Due to improved wind conditions, Danish wind turbines produced 28.5 percent more electricity in H1 than in the same period of the previous year. As a result, wind power's share of the overall electricity supply increased from 41 percent to 52 percent in H1 of 2022.

"The increased production of wind power contributes to a reduction in total energy consumption because wind power plants produce power with no loss of usable energy, whereas electricity produced at thermal power plants (using biomass, coal, gas, and oil) also results in a conversion loss," said the DEA.

In addition, Denmark's consumption of coal from combined heat and power plants (CHP) increased by 2.7 percent, while consumption of gas-diesel oil and gasoline rose by 14.8 percent and 16.2 percent respectively year on year.

The statistics also indicate a significant increase in the production of electricity from solar cells, which rose "63.9 percent higher than in the same period in 2021 due to significantly more sunshine hours and the installation of new solar systems."

According to the DEA, the gross total production of primary energy, or energy derived directly from natural resources, increased by 4.6 percent compared to the same period last year, while the gross total production of renewable energy and crude oil increased by 7.8 percent and 4.0 percent respectively.
