South African gov't moves to fast-track energy projects application

Release Date:2023-08-02 12:06:49     Source:Xinhua

The South African government on Thursday launched an energy one-stop shop to fast-track the country's energy projects applications and increase the supply of energy available to the grid.

The energy one-stop shop seeks to address constraints that energy developers face, including regulatory and other measures which slow down the approval of energy supply projects, said Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel.

He also launched an energy resilience fund to mitigate the impact of the energy crisis.

"The energy one-stop shop and energy resilience fund are critical steps towards alleviating the challenges faced by our industries during this energy crisis. We are committed to fostering a resilient business environment and accelerating private-sector investment in electricity generation to secure a stable energy future," Patel said.

The Presidency is exploring ways to simplify these processes to address blockages, according to Patel.

The energy one-stop shop will start with dedicated personnel, a website, a registration portal for energy projects and a mapped process showing where a project is in the approval process, the minister said.

South Africa is facing energy deficiencies and the government is approving applications from independent power producers to produce more energy.
