Cyprus confirms major gas discovery in offshore block

Release Date:2025-09-29 16:27:16     Source:xinhua

Cyprus on Friday announced a significant new natural gas discovery, saying two adjacent fields confirmed in its exclusive economic zone contain an estimated 8 to 9 trillion cubic feet of reserves, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said.

Pegasus and Glaucus fields, located in offshore Block 10 and operated by ExxonMobil, were drilled earlier this year, with results released after a detailed data assessment. The reserve estimates were presented to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides by ExxonMobil Vice President John Ardill, Letymbiotis told reporters.

Energy experts described the find as a major addition to Cyprus' offshore gas resources.

Cypriot officials said six gas fields discovered so far in the country's maritime jurisdiction are estimated to hold 15 to 18 trillion cubic feet of reserves. Plans to transport Cypriot gas to Egypt's liquefaction plants for export are already at an advanced stage, they added.
