Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said Russia boasts one of the "greenest" energy mixes worldwide and holds about 90 percent of the global nuclear power plant construction market.

During the plenary session of the Russian Energy Week International Forum, Putin emphasized that 87 percent of Russia's electricity is generated with minimal or zero carbon emissions. This low-carbon power mix includes gas-fired generation, nuclear energy and renewable energy sources.

Beyond domestic efforts, Putin highlighted that Russian companies are advancing green and long-term power generation projects internationally. With the involvement of Russian scientists, engineers and managers, over 400 hydropower projects have been implemented across 55 countries globally.

The president also highlighted the country's status in the global nuclear power plant construction market.

"Around the world, 110 power units based on Russian designs have been built," Putin said, adding that Russia plans to commission over 29 gigawatts of nuclear power plant capacity, including small modular reactors, within the next 15 years. "Nuclear power generation will also be deployed in Russia's Far East and Siberia."

The president added that Russia will deepen nuclear industry cooperation with countries of the Global South and within the framework of BRICS.

In addition, Putin said Russia needs to establish "comprehensive energy sovereignty" covering resource extraction and processing to the transportation of finished products.

Russia is striving to achieve technological leadership in the energy sector and calls for comprehensive technological cooperation among energy-producing countries, according to the president.

The country plans to consolidate its leading position in the global energy sector and establish a fair and sustainable global energy development model through the development of partnerships, he stressed.

The 8th Russian Energy Week International Forum is taking place in Moscow from Oct. 15 to 17, with the theme "Building the Energy of the Future Together."
