Slovenian gas wholesaler Geoplin and Russian energy group Gazprom will sign a gas supply contract for the next five years on Friday, Geoplin announced on Thursday.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec, Russian Ambassador Doku Zavgajev and Gazprom Deputy Chairman Alexander Medvedev were present at the signing ceremony.

Under the contract, Slovenia will import 600 millions cubic meters of gas a year, the Slovenian national media Slovenian Press Agency STA reported.

Geoplin was quoted by STA as saying that negotiations on the deal had been completed in late 2017.

Natural gas accounts for 12 percent of Slovenia's energy consumption. About 40 percent of natural gas used by Slovenia is imported from Russia, which means that the gas from this deal will meet about 5 percent of Slovenia's energy demand, according to the news portal 24ur.com.
