Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday instructed the country's Public Utilities Commission to take measures for the implementation of the long-term power generation plan, a statement from his office said on Wednesday.
The statement said the president has held talks with the relevant authorities on Wednesday regarding the implementation between 2018 and 2037.
Sri Lanka's annual electricity requirement is 15,000 Gigawatt hours.
The spokesman from Ceylon Electricity Board, Sulakshana Jayawardane told Xinhua that the requirement had an annual growth of 5 to 6 percent, therefore the country needed to build major power plants under its long term generation plan.
Sri Lanka depends on hydro-power and coal energy for its electricity requirements at the moment.
