Austrian state-owned OMV and Russian Gazprom on Tuesday extended their gas supply contract from 2028 till 2040.

The contract was signed during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Austria.

At a joint press conference with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Putin said that by signing the contract, mutual cooperation is further secured.

The contract also marks the 50th anniversary of Russian gas deliveries to Austria, it was announced.

Putin said the Austrian government saw the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project as "positive". Russia believes the United States wanted to bury the project, and continues to apply pressure on the EU to this end.

The U.S. stance is that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline undermines the overall security and energy stability of Europe.

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is set to run from the Russian coast along the Baltic Sea bed to the German shore, and is scheduled to be put into operation by the end of 2019.
