Russian and Iranian senior officials held talks here on more potential bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the energy sector, the Russian Energy Ministry said Monday.

According to a ministry statement, during the meeting Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak and Iranian Petroleum Minister Bijan Zanganeh discussed the possibility of Russian oil and gas companies' participation in mining projects in Iran and cooperation in joint infrastructure gas projects.

They also touched upon cooperation in multilateral formats, in particular, through the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), it said.

"Regular contacts at the highest level create favorable conditions for strengthening bilateral cooperation both at the interagency level and at the corporate level," Novak said.

In March, Russia and Iran signed a string of cooperation agreements in various fields including the energy sector. The two sides paid particular attention to bilateral projects in the nuclear power industry and agreed to continue coordinated efforts to stabilize international markets.
