The Nishan oil field in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour returned into operation on Tuesday after the completion of the reparation process, state news agency SANA reported.

Syria's Prime Minister Emad Khamis attended the reopening ceremony of the oil field, which produces 1,100 barrels per day, said SANA.

It added that local government had repaired and rehabilitated the field, which was looted by the rebels when they were in control of the area.

Throughout the early years of Syria's more than seven-year-long war, the Syrian government had lost the majority of the oil and gas fields across the country.

The situation has changed when the army started clawing back rebel-held areas over the past three years and has recently become in control of over two-thirds of the Syrian territories.

Several oil fields in central Syria have returned operating and more are being repaired in order to be put back into service with other fields still out of the government control mainly in areas controlled by the Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria.

The oil sector has suffered great losses during the war, with 2017 statistics indicating that the losses in the oil sector are estimated at 68 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ali Ghanem, the Syrian minister of oil.
