The East African Community (EAC) on Wednesday launched the Energy Security Policy Framework that seeks to guide countries to manage the security of their energy supplies.
The framework will guide East African countries as they implement a number of energy projects to address the low access to energy supply in the region, said EAC senior energy expert Elsam Byempaka at the launch during an East African regional meeting of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Kigali, capital city of Rwanda.
EAC and UNECA Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa jointly developed the framework.
It will address disruptions in supply of imported energy, particularly hydrocarbons, and volatility in prices, which derails the momentum of industrialization taking place in EAC member states, said Byempaka.
The framework will improve regional collaboration for more sustainable, affordable and reliable energy supply, said Yohannes Hailu, Economic Affairs Officer of UNECA Sub-regional Office for Eastern Africa.
It is intended to provide policy guidance towards better understanding, measurement and management of energy security risks and challenges in the energy sector within the EAC, he said.
