South Sudan said on Monday it has discovered a new oil well which it plans to explore soon, said a senior official.

Michael Makuei Lueth, information minister of South Sudan, told journalists that they will embark on exploring the oil well in the Gasab area of Adar near the Paloch oil field in the northern Upper Nile region.

"The minister of petroleum informed us that they made oil discovery in a place called Gasab in Adar area," said Makuei in Juba but did not disclose the size of the well.

Awow Daniel Chuang, minister of petroleum last week briefed the cabinet about the discovery of the Adar oil block.

"Oilfields are more secure than any other place in South Sudan which means South Sudan is becoming more secure and the peace implementation also is in progress which will help us to attract more investors to South Sudan whether in the upstream or downstream," said Chuang.

South Sudan will on Oct. 28-30 host its third annual oil and gas conference in partnership with Africa Oil and Power which focuses on key issues of finance, oil field technology and community development.

Oil production has of late peaked to 175,000 barrels a day from less than 130,000 bpd due to prevailing peace after the government and opposition groups signed the revitalized peace deal in September 2018 in Ethiopia.
